Over the weekend, I read a column by Sally Brampton in Psychologies Magazine, that gave some very simple and very valuable advice:

This morning when I arose from my slumber, I was presented with an alien child.
I’m sure it must happen to all of us, on the odd occasion, we find ourselves in the hands of a child who is so alarmingly different in their behaviour that we can’t understand what switch was flicked, or what brought on such a drastic change.
Incessant advice puts today’s parents in a situation where expectations engulf them; expectations that they didn’t create themselves, that aren’t necessarily based on their family or personal values and may not take into consideration the effect on the parents’ own time, money or state of mind.
